Microsoft will now track your every move
At its Build conference, Microsoft unveiled a new AI feature that will be integrated into Windows 11 on Copilot + PCs called Recall that records everything you do on your computer so that if you forget something, you can “recall” it later.
CEO Satya Nadella is so excited. AI isn’t just for the cloud any more. It’s now on your computer. What’s more, this new generation of PCs is going to blow Apple away.
Also, Recall is super helpful! Recall will make your life easier! If you forget what shirt you liked on J Crew, or what last week’s email said, or what music you listened to six months ago, or the eulogy you wrote for your mom, or what epic argument you had on Messenger, Recall has you covered.
It accomplishes this by constantly taking screenshots of everything you’ve done. And you can search in a browser, or using your voice.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, what about privacy?
It’s okay! Recall only works at the hardware level. Everything is stored locally. Now admittedly this is an unusual feature for Microsoft considering how hard it shifted to being cloud-based and subscription based. There’s nothing like having to pay for a short story I wrote on Word for Mac all those years ago when I actually owned the software.
In a great show of benevolence, Microsoft is even graciously allowing users to choose what gets captured, delete snapshots and even turn it off. *Wink*
You can absolutely trust Microsoft when they say it’s secure. Because their computers never get hacked. And Microsoft would never go back on its word or accidentally mine some of your data to train its AI. Big Tech never lies to us. And if you think they do you’re just a conspiracy theorist.
A big part of the reason Recall exists is to fix local Windows PC searches which have been notoriously bad since before the flood.
Did it really take AI to fix this? Possibly. But AI isn’t helping LinkedIn get any better. For instance, at this point in my advertising career I would be at the Creative Director to Executive Creative Director level.
This is the LinkedIn job notification I got served up with a suggestion that I would be a perfect fit for this role.
